The terms paralegal and legal assistant are synonymous. Divorce Paralegals or Legal Assistants are professionals authorized to prepare legal documents for a client, but only at the direction of the client. In other words, a divorce paralegal is there to assist the "self-help" client handle their own divorce matters without the cost of an attorney. A paralegal / legal document assistant is NOT a lawyer. By law, they cannot give legal advice or represent clients in the courts in any way. For those who feel comfortable doing their own divorce, a paralegal or legal document assistant can be an affordable solution.
